Startup U – Anil Dash Have thought for a long time that Portland would benefit from having a world class / larger university like Boulder, Silicon Valley and Boston do… but then they also share a common trait of having a lot of money. Either way, interesting discussion. (categories: educationstartupsentrepreneurshipschoolbusinesscities )
rc3.org – We need to be less stingy with praise and acknowledgement Totally agree with this blog post. Quote: "The mechanisms of social software make it easier than ever. You can Favorite things on Twitter and on Flickr. There are Facebook Like buttons and Google +1 buttons everywhere. And of course, you can leave positive feedback in comments or just send someone an email telling them that you appreciate their work. For more on that, I’d recommend Anil Dash’s post All in Favor. In the real world giving people a nice comment is easy enough if you try." (categories: culturebusinessmotivationpeoplemanagement )
Joe Hewitt my definition of the Web then is resources loaded over the Internet using HTTP and then displayed in a hyperlink-capable client. This definition is liberating. It helps me see a future beyond HTML which is still the Web. I can say now that when I exclaim my love for the Web, it’s the freedom of driving the open Internet in a browser that I love, not the rendering technology. Hyperlink traversal matters. The Internet being global and decentralized matters. HTML does not matter. (categories: htmlhttpwebinternet )
Bada Bing, Bada Boom « The World As Best As I Remember It Quote: "People look out for themselves when there’s nothing to look forward to. I often tell managers to analyze the efficacy of their own leadership if members of their team start asking about career-related topics all the time. Most people, at least most engineers, tend to resort to career last. Engineers mostly want to work on something they believe in, to be part of something that will change the world. When things are going right, career tends to be a side-effect of participating fruitfully in a meaningful project." (categories: culturebusinessinspirationcareermicrosoft )
Work on Stuff that Matters: First Principles – O’Reilly Radar Quote: "You should regard money as fuel for what you really want to do, not as a goal in and of itself. Money is like gas in the car — you need to pay attention or you’ll end up on the side of the road — but a well-lived life is not a tour of gas stations! Whatever you do, think about what you really value. If you’re an entrepreneur, the time you spend thinking about your values will help you build a better company. If you’re going to work for someone else, the time you spend understanding your values will help you find the right kind of company or institution to work for, and when you find it, to do a better job." Caterina.net» Blog Archive » Make things Quote: "Leaders are not what many people think–people with huge crowds following them. Leaders are people who go their own way without caring, or even looking to see whether anyone is following them. “Leadership qualities” are not the qualities that enable people to attract followers, but those that enable them to do without them. The include, at the very least, courage, endurance, patience, humor, flexibility, resourcefulness, determination, a keen sense of reality, and the ability to keep a cool and clear head even when things are going badly. This is the opposite of the “charisma” that we hear so much about." (categories: businessinspirationleadershipculturevalues )
