In short, the message is this:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\n&#8230; many, many things can change and your URIs can and should stay the same. They only can if you think about how you design them.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Why bring it up now?  I got an email from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.webfreak.no\/\">Jens Anders Bakke<\/a> a couple weeks ago, in it he asked what &#8220;&#8230; we regular users can do about &#8230;&#8221; the fact that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.macromedia.com\/support\/forums\/\">Macromedia Forums<\/a> was recently moved (from <a href=\"http:\/\/webforums.macromedia.com\/\">http:\/\/webforums.macromedia.com\/<\/a> to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.macromedia.com\/support\/forums\/\">http:\/\/www.macromedia.com\/support\/forums\/<\/a>).  He brought up the fact that alot of people link to the forums when discussing a bug or a problem and because of the move, none of those links that matter (ie: the links that actually point to something besides the forums homepage) work (I&#8217;ve done it myself <a href=\"http:\/\/cephas.net\/blog\/2002\/11\/11\/coldfusion_cfcs.html\">in<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sys-con.com\/coldfusion\/articleprint.cfm?id=700\">multiple<\/a> places).  In fact, Google can find about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/search?hl=en&amp;lr=&amp;ie=UTF-8&amp;oe=UTF-8&amp;q=%22webforums.macromedia.%2Bcom%22\">7,400 links to webforums.macromedia.com<\/a>.  Some of those don&#8217;t work anymore. It&#8217;s a small thing, but seriously, how hard would it have been to add a couple lines of mod_write kung foo to your Apache conf?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tim Berners Lee wrote this essay years ago (1998 in fact), and it&#8217;s a good one.
